22/07/2008The long-awaited Wordpress app appeared on the iTunes AppStore this week - giving Wordpress bloggers no excuse to leave their blogs idle anymore. Based on a simple menu interface similar to that of Mail, Wordpress grants its users the ability to update either their Wordpress.com or self hosted Wordpress blog on the move.
The simple menu-based funtionality is excellent. The application displays all of your local and remote blog posts and allows you to edit existing posts or create brand new ones.
The application boasts a ‘Finder-like’ interface to navigate through both local and remote posts - this is highly intuitive and extremely easy to pick up -just touch a post or click the ‘compose’ icon and the application takes you to the editing screen.
The editing screen is also very easy to use. Above the post you can edit the title, tags, catagories and published status, as you would in the editor in your site’s Wordpress dashboard, and below the post are options to write, insert a photo, see a live preview or change settings such as publishing dates and passwords.
The photo functionality isn’t ideal to be honest - photos can only be placed at the end of the post. To add photos onto a post, touch the photos icon at the bottom of the editing page. The application then allows you to take a snapshot with the iPhone camera or upload files from your iPhone photo library, this then places your chosen files in the post’s own photo library. Hit save and the photos added to Wordpress will appear at the bottom of your post when you publish it.
It’s a shame that the ability to insert pictures with captions anywhere on the page is not present, but this certainly isn’t a gamebreaker to the overall functionality of the app. Also missing is Custom Fields, but I’m sure this will be added with a future update.
As a testament to how good the Wordpress app is; I have written this whole post on it. Give it a spin and prepare to be impressed!
This really is iPhone development as it should be.
